The story of the novel, in brief, grows with the development of a semi-literate woman in a corner of the state of West Bengal in India, the birthplace of the writer himself. It co-insides with that of the rather complicated and pathetic history of the Indian subcontinent in the late thirties and forties of the twentieth century, which witnessed the greatest man-made famine of the early forties in Bengal, awakening of the Bengali Muslims, their resurgence in the political life of undivided India and Bengal, the ugly rise of religious communalism between the Hindus and the Muslims, the great Calcutta Killings and, sadly but finally, the partition of the subcontinent into two states on the basis of religion. The protagonist, the semi-literate housewife of a rather lower middle class Muslim family, found herself on the wrong side of the new border. She refused to move on to the other side, where her husband and children were going simply because she was not convinced of the rationale of the partition. She throws an open challenge inviting whoever it might be to convince her of its necessity. Can any of the readers do so?

হাসান আজিজুল হক একজন বাংলাদেশী ঔপন্যাসিক ও ছোট গল্পকার। ১৯৩৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দের ২ ফেব্রুয়ারি বর্তমান ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বর্ধমান জেলার যবগ্রামে এক সম্ভ্রান্ত এবং একান্নবর্তী পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি বাংলা ভাষার অন্যতম প্রধান কথাসাহিত্যক হিসেবে পরিগণিত। ষাটের দশকে আবির্ভূত এই কথাসাহিত্যিক তার সুঠাম গদ্য এবং মর্মস্পর্শী বর্ণনাভঙ্গির জন্য প্রসিদ্ধ। জীবনসংগ্রামে লিপ্ত মানুষের কথকতা তার গল্প-উপন্যাসের প্রধানতম অনুষঙ্গ। রাঢ়বঙ্গ তার অনেক গল্পের পটভূমি। আগুনপাখি (২০০৬) হক রচিত শ্রেষ্ঠ উপন্যাস। তিনি বাংলা একাডেমি সাহিত্য পুরস্কার লাভ করেন ১৯৭০ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে। ১৯৯৯ খ্রিষ্টাব্দে বাংলাদেশ সরকার তাকে একুশে পদকে ও ২০১৯ সালে স্বাধীনতা পুরস্কারে ভূষিত করে। এই অসামান্য গদ্যশিল্পী তার সার্বজৈবনিক সাহিত্যচর্চার স্বীকৃতি স্বরূপ ২০১৮ সালের সেপ্টেম্বরে “সাহিত্যরত্ন” উপাধি লাভ করেন।
